Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the decision of whether to waive the right to view letters of recommendation (LoR) under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) in the context of college applications, specifically for OSU. Participants explore the implications of this choice and its impact on the application process.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses uncertainty about whether to waive their right to view recommendation letters, noting that there are arguments for both sides.
  • Another participant suggests that the general rule is to waive the right, indicating that many LoR writers may not submit letters if the right is not waived.
  • A follow-up question is posed regarding additional reasons for waiving, as the original poster believes their teacher may not have a strong preference.
  • It is mentioned that a letter which the applicant can see may carry less weight compared to one that remains confidential.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus, as there are differing opinions on the implications of waiving the right to view letters of recommendation.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the motivations of LoR writers and the perceived weight of letters based on confidentiality are present but not fully explored.

I'm applying to OSU but I'm not sure whether or not to waive or not to waive my right to view letters of recommendation on FERPA. I see arguments for both but no clear answer. Can anyone help me

Yes, the general rule is to waive them. Many LoR writers will not submit them if you don't.

Is there any other reason aside from this? I'm pretty sure the teacher writing my letter doesn't care.

A letter that you see will have less weight than a letter you don't.
