The discussion centers on the decision between attending San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) and UC San Diego (UCSD) for an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering. San Luis Obispo is noted for its competitive transfer admissions, with some students reporting rejections despite strong applications to other prestigious schools like Berkeley. In contrast, UCSD is recognized for its strong academic programs but is perceived to lack a vibrant social scene, making it a better fit for students who prefer a quieter environment. I am going to be an undergraduate majoring in mechanical engineering and I am having trouble choosing between San Luis Obispo and UCSD. I know that both schools have great undergraduate programs, but I would like to get some advice on which school to choose before I make my decision.

All I know about San Luis Obispo is that they have tough admissions for transfers. I heard of some students in my community college who got accepted by Berkeley but not San Luis Obispo for engineering.

UCSD is great for academics and not known for having much of a social atmosphere, so it fits well if you're not the partying type.
