Account deletion is not possible on the platform, as posts are considered property of the site and their removal would compromise site integrity. Users can request a ban from moderators or change their password to a random string to prevent future access. Some users express concern over the lack of control over their accounts, particularly in light of GDPR regulations in the UK, which allow for data deletion requests. The site's privacy statement supports the idea that users should be able to anonymize their posts. Ultimately, while direct deletion is not an option, there are alternative methods to limit account access.

How do I delete my account?

Physics news on Phys.org
You can't.

Your posts are a matter of record, and property of PF. Removing them harms the integrity and readability of the site.

You could ask the mods if they would ban you.

If you really want to never come back, change your password to something random.

  • You can't ever delete the messages.
  • You can just stop coming. If you don;t have the discipline for that, change the password to 100 random characters and that will pretty much do it.
  • If that's not enough, you can ask a Mentor to lock you out. Expect this to be irreversable.

Well that seems rather creepy that people have no control over their account.

However, I am a citizen of the UK, which still adheres to GDPR law. Under that law, I can request the site delete my information and anonymise any posts I have made. The site's own privacy statement outlines this.

I have some solemn news to report. Many in the community had been wondering where the prolific @Vanadium 50 has been. V50 hasn't posted a message in nearly a year. After months of questioning, the mentor group dug in and did some investigation and we're confident V50 passed away early this year. Few members need reminding what kind of force @Vanadium 50 was for the community and physics. A mentor for 5+ years and an annual award winner seemingly every other year. He has a top 10 post count...
