Understanding Discharge: Where Does Capacitor Charge Go?

Click For Summary

Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of capacitor discharge and the behavior of charge during this process. Participants are exploring the fundamental principles of how capacitors function, particularly focusing on the movement of charge from positive to negative terminals during discharge.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants are attempting to articulate their understanding of capacitor charging and discharging. Questions about the basic principles of capacitor operation are raised, with some expressing uncertainty about how to explain the process.

Discussion Status

The discussion is ongoing, with participants seeking to clarify foundational concepts related to capacitors. Some guidance has been offered regarding the need for a better understanding of basic principles, indicating a direction for further exploration.

Contextual Notes

There appears to be a recognition of gaps in foundational knowledge among participants, which may affect their ability to engage with the topic effectively. The discussion highlights the importance of understanding basic concepts before delving into more complex questions about charge movement.

Welcome to the PF.

Can you first explain what happens when you "charge" a capacitor?

Well, then it sounds like you need to study the basics a bit more. I'm not trying to be flippant here, I'm serious. When we see people asking questions that show a lack of understanding of the basics, we don't generally think of it as helpful to just feed them an answer to a question that is something they really should know as part of the basics.
