SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on the concepts of spin reversal and CPT (Charge, Parity, Time) invariance in physics. It highlights that spin is odd under time reversal, which means that when time is reversed, the spin of a particle changes direction, resulting in a negative sign. The analogy of a classical rotating object and the concept of rewinding a video of particle motion are emphasized as effective tools for understanding these phenomena.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of quantum mechanics principles
  • Familiarity with CPT invariance
  • Basic knowledge of particle physics
  • Concept of time reversal in physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the implications of CPT invariance in particle physics
  • Explore the mathematical framework of time reversal in quantum mechanics
  • Study the relationship between spin and angular momentum
  • Investigate classical analogies for quantum phenomena
USEFUL FOR

Physics students, researchers in quantum mechanics, and anyone interested in the foundational principles of particle physics and symmetry operations.

Hi all,

I was just pondering why spin is odd under time reversal. I am trying to get my head around CPT invariance and am failing to find good material online.

Thanks

Here, the analogy to a classical rotating object is fine: After T, it spins in the other direction, therefore the spin gets a minus sign.

Ah ok thanks. Turns out the analogy of hitting the rewind button on a video of the particles motion is more useful than Id thought.
