Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the Tolman solution in the context of general relativity and its modifications through f(R) corrections. Participants seek references and examples to deepen their understanding of these solutions, particularly in relation to exact solutions of Einstein's equations.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests suggestions for texts or papers to better understand the Tolman solution and its f(R) corrections.
  • Another participant asks for clarification on which specific solution is being referenced regarding the closed solution.
  • Some participants express a need for examples of the closed solution and the f(R) corrections.
  • A participant shares their sources of information about the Tolman solution, mentioning specific textbooks but indicates a desire for more literature.
  • Links to Wikipedia pages on the Tolman metric and f(R) gravity are provided as potential resources.
  • One participant notes the existence of recent papers on arXiv related to the topic, although they find the mathematics challenging.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the need for more resources and examples regarding the Tolman solution and f(R) corrections, but there is no consensus on specific references or the clarity of the solutions discussed.

Contextual Notes

Some participants express uncertainty about the mathematical complexity of the topic and the availability of accessible literature.

Hello,

Can anyone suggest some text(books/papers) for a better understanding of Tolman solution and the solution with f(R) corrections?

I came across Tolman solution while studying exact solutions of Einstein's equations, first in "Lectures on General Relativity by A. Papapetrou" and later in "An introduction to the theory of early universe(vol. 2) by Gorbunov and Rubakov". But still i need more literature on the subject and i wish to study the solution in presence of f(r) corrections.

Thanks

Tolman solution

Can you give more information or a reference for which solution this is?

For the closed solution.
I am looking for an example of the closed solution and the solution with f(R) corrections.

Sorry, that doesn't help. Please give a reference.

Hello Peter,

I am actually looking for a reference or example myself to study from.

How do you know about "the Tolman solution"? Where did you learn of it? You have to have some source of information.

As for the latter part i came across this-

but i prefer a cheaper alternative.

Sorry, i should have posted the details beforehand.

There is lots of recent stuff related to this topic on arxiv, and it's not paywalled. I've been looking at a few papers on Tolman-Bondi gravitational collapse, but the maths is way over my head unfortunately. I'd appreciate more discussion on the matter . . . ;)
