[QUOTE="Flucky, post: 5091345, member: 373056"] [h2]Homework Statement [/h2] Use the shell model to determine the parity and spin assignments for all the stable isotopes of calcium. [h2]Homework Equations[/h2] n/a [h2]The Attempt at a Solution[/h2] The stable isotopes seem to be [SUP]40[/SUP]Ca, [SUP]42[/SUP]Ca, [SUP]43[/SUP]Ca, [SUP]44[/SUP]Ca, [SUP]46[/SUP]Ca, and [SUP]48[/SUP]Ca I believe all of those isotopes except [SUP]43[/SUP]Ca are even-even which means that they have spin=0 and parity=even, however I'm a bit stuck on how to work out the spin and parity of [SUP]43[/SUP]Ca. There are 23 neutrons, so 20 of those fill up the shells to the magic number (20) and we have 3 left over. How do I work out the orbital angular momentum [I]l [/I]and [I]j[/I]-value of those? With these values I could work out the spin of the unpaired nucleon (which would be the [I]j[/I]-value) and its parity (-1)[SUP]l[/SUP] [/QUOTE]
