Homework Statement
on a spaceship traveling at .5c a torch is shone in the direction of the spacecraft . what is the lights velocity and why?
You posted this under the "homework" section and simply ignored the rest of the form. It's there for a reason- no one is going to do your homework for you. What course is this for? What have you learned about the speed of light and different 'frames of reference'?Gen.Coolio said:Homework Statement

Homework Equations
The Attempt at a Solution
The velocity of light travelling at .5c is half the speed of light, which is approximately 149,896,229 meters per second. This is about 670,616,629 miles per hour.
The speed of sound is approximately 343 meters per second, which is much slower than the speed of light at .5c. Light travels significantly faster than sound.
According to the theory of relativity, nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. This means that even light traveling at .5c is already at its maximum speed and cannot be surpassed.
When an object travels at the speed of light, time and space are affected. Time appears to slow down and objects appear to shrink in the direction of motion. However, at the speed of .5c, these effects are not as noticeable as when an object travels at the speed of light.
There are currently no known objects that can travel at .5c. However, in particle accelerators, particles can be accelerated to speeds close to the speed of light, including .5c. Additionally, cosmic rays that come from outer space can also travel at these speeds.
