SUMMARY

The probability problem presented involves five friends—Austin, Bob, Brian, Jen, and Gretchen—drawing two names from a hat to win tickets to see NKOTB. The outcomes to evaluate are: A) Both Bob and Brian get a ticket, B) Only 1 boy gets a ticket, C) No girls get a ticket, and D) Austin gets a ticket. The most likely outcome is B, as there are three boys and two girls, making the probability of selecting one boy and one girl higher than the other scenarios. The logic is based on combinatorial probability and the total number of favorable outcomes for each option.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic probability concepts
  • Familiarity with combinatorial analysis
  • Knowledge of outcomes and events in probability
  • Ability to calculate probabilities using combinations
NEXT STEPS
  • Study combinatorial probability and its applications
  • Learn how to calculate combinations using the formula C(n, k)
  • Explore real-world examples of probability in contests and lotteries
  • Review the concept of independent and dependent events in probability
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for students, educators, and anyone interested in enhancing their understanding of probability, particularly in practical scenarios involving contests and random selections.

Very easy probability problem...please help.

this problem has been driving me nuts. can someone give a simple explanation.

Five friends, Austin, Bob, Brian, Jen and Gretchen enter a contest and win two tickets to see NKOTB. They decide to put their names in a hat and choose two to see who gets the tickets. Which of the following outcomes is most likely?

A. Both Bob and Brian get a ticket.
B. Only 1 boy gets a ticket.
C. No girls get a ticket.
D. Austin gets a ticket.

I know the answer; I just want to know why.

Thanks,

What are your answers and the logic behind them?
