Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the effects of violent video games on players, specifically addressing claims about cognitive benefits versus potential negative outcomes such as obesity and depression. Participants explore various perspectives on whether playing violent video games can enhance intelligence or strategic thinking.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants reference a CDC study suggesting that video game players may be more likely to be overweight, depressed, and introverted.
  • Others argue that violent video games can develop quick-thinking strategies and enhance predictive skills rather than mere reactive responses.
  • Several participants claim personal experiences of intelligence linked to playing violent video games, asserting that their gaming habits correlate with cognitive abilities.
  • One participant humorously suggests a scenario where a nation of "smart couch potatoes" could be mobilized for remote-controlled battles, highlighting a satirical view of gaming culture.
  • Another participant notes that complex games like World of Warcraft (WoW) require significant cognitive engagement, which may stimulate the brain to some extent.
  • There is a mention that the findings of the CDC do not necessarily contradict the claims of cognitive benefits, emphasizing that issues arise primarily with obsessive gaming behavior.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a mix of agreement and disagreement regarding the effects of violent video games, with some supporting the idea of cognitive benefits while others highlight potential negative consequences. The discussion remains unresolved with multiple competing views present.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes references to specific studies and personal anecdotes, but lacks consensus on the overall impact of violent video games on intelligence and health. Assumptions about the nature of gaming habits and their effects are not fully explored.

I read, some time ago, a research unveiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that claims video game players were more likely to be overweight, depressed and introverted.

Does this surprise you? Well, it did surprise me.

I agree.

I also think it develops quick-thinking strategy styles. It teaches you to predict, not to react.

I play violent video games and I'm a genius so it must be true.

X2, GTA IV is one of my favorites by far.

GTA is OK, but Battlefield Bad Company 2 is where its at.

Wow, I can see it now a nation full of smart couch potatoes. If needed the army can come in with wheel barrows and cart them off to command centers where they are dumped on to couches with Mt Dew piped in. They could keep remote controlled battles going for days on end.

Command centre's are where it's at! But seriously video games with many functions such as WoW and whatnot and all the characteristics in that game that you have to calculate do stimulate your brain (to a certain degree).

That finding doesn't contradict the CDC research. As with many things, the problems come if you are obsessive about them.
