Water Molecules in CuSO4.5H2O: How Many are Attached by Coordinate Bond?

In summary, the question is asking about the number of water molecules attached to CuSO4.5H2O through a coordinate bond. The answer is 4, as copper exists in the form of [Cu(H2O)4]2+ and there are 4 water molecules attached to it. The confusion arises because copper can also form complexes, but this does not affect the number of coordinated water molecules.

Homework Statement

How many water molecule in CuSO4.5H2O attached only by coordinate bond?

The Attempt at a Solution

Copper exists in the form of Cu2+. So, it has one vacant d-orbital. The answer should then be 1. But it's 2 :(

How many water molecule in CuSO4.5H2O attached only by coordinate bond?

The Attempt at a Solution

Copper exists in the form of Cu2+. So, it has one vacant d-orbital. The answer should then be 1. But it's 2 :(

Copper can form complexes but I don't see how the answer is 2. To my knowledge, it exists as ##[Cu(H_2O)_4]^{+2}SO_4^{2-}\cdot H_2O##. Hence, the answer should be 4.

1. What is the chemical formula for CuSO4.5H2O?

The chemical formula for CuSO4.5H2O is copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate. This means that it contains one copper atom, one sulfur atom, four oxygen atoms, and ten hydrogen atoms.

2. How many water molecules are in one unit of CuSO4.5H2O?

There are five water molecules in one unit of CuSO4.5H2O. This is indicated by the "5H2O" in the chemical formula.

3. What is the role of water molecules in CuSO4.5H2O?

The water molecules in CuSO4.5H2O play a crucial role in the structure and properties of the compound. They are necessary for the formation of hydrated copper(II) sulfate crystals and help to stabilize the structure of the compound.

4. How does the presence of water molecules affect the properties of CuSO4.5H2O?

The presence of water molecules in CuSO4.5H2O affects its physical and chemical properties. It increases the solubility of the compound in water and also changes its color from white to blue. The water molecules also help to lower the melting and boiling points of the compound.

5. Can the number of water molecules in CuSO4.5H2O vary?

Yes, the number of water molecules in CuSO4.5H2O can vary. This compound exists in different forms known as hydrates, which have different amounts of water molecules. For example, CuSO4.3H2O is a different hydrate of copper(II) sulfate that contains three water molecules instead of five.
