SUMMARY

Higher alkyl sulphates are surfactants derived from fatty alcohols with a carbon chain length typically greater than 12 carbon atoms. These compounds are commonly used in cleaning products due to their effective emulsifying and foaming properties. The term "higher" specifically refers to the longer carbon chains, which enhance the surfactant's performance in removing dirt and grease. Understanding the chemical structure and function of higher alkyl sulphates is essential for evaluating their role in cleaning formulations.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic knowledge of organic chemistry, particularly fatty alcohols
  • Understanding of surfactant properties and functions
  • Familiarity with cleaning product formulations
  • Knowledge of chemical safety and handling
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the chemical structure of higher alkyl sulphates and their synthesis methods
  • Explore the role of surfactants in cleaning products and their environmental impact
  • Study the differences between higher alkyl sulphates and other surfactants like linear alkylbenzene sulfonates
  • Investigate regulatory guidelines for the use of surfactants in consumer products
USEFUL FOR

Chemistry students, product formulators, cleaning product manufacturers, and anyone interested in the chemical composition of cleaning agents.

Hey.
I was looking at the chemicals in a certain cleaning product, and there was one that i am unfamiliar with (and couldn't really find relevant information about). The product has been claimed to contain "Higher alkyl sulphates". What does this refer to? What are alkyl sulphates, and what does the "higher" refer to?

Thanks in advance.
Dan.

PS. I am a first year engineering student and have yet to take any chemistry units, so my chemistry knowledge doesn't go past high school chem.

It is probably in reference to the carbon number.
