Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around alternatives to silicon in chip manufacturing, exploring various materials and methods for building electric circuits, particularly without the use of semiconductors.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Problem interpretation

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants inquire about specific alternatives to silicon and the methods of constructing electric circuits without semiconductors. Some mention vacuum tubes and thermionic valves as historical alternatives, while others suggest the need for specificity in the inquiry.

Discussion Status

The discussion is active with various perspectives being shared. Some participants have provided examples of non-semiconductor materials and circuit elements, while others emphasize the importance of clarity in the original question. There is no explicit consensus on the alternatives being discussed.

Contextual Notes

Participants are reminded to show effort in their inquiries, indicating that the discussion is within a homework help context and may be subject to specific guidelines regarding the depth of questions posed.

potato chip?

I think you need to be more specific ... "alternative" for what?
There are lots of semiconducting materials.
There are ways to build electric circuits without using semiconductors too.

What are the ways to build electric circuits without using semiconductors? thx

Use vacuum tubes.

Before semiconductors, the same roles were played by thermionic valves: vacuum tubes.

Non-semiconducting circuit elements are "conductors", "resistors", and insulators.
Clever arrangements of conductors and resistors can be made to do all kinds of clever things.
Thermionic valves, for example, use many different conductors and resistors and insulators together to achieve their effects.
Like I said - you need to be specific.

thanks

Another alternative is to use brain matter.

Please check your PMs. We require that you show some effort when asking schoolwork-type questions. Thank you.
