AI Thread Summary
Alternatives to silicon in chip manufacturing include various semiconducting materials and non-semiconducting circuit elements like conductors, resistors, and insulators. Vacuum tubes, or thermionic valves, can also serve similar functions as semiconductors in electric circuits. Creative arrangements of these components can achieve complex circuit functionalities. Additionally, unconventional suggestions like using brain matter were humorously mentioned. The discussion emphasizes the need for specificity when exploring alternatives to silicon.

potato chip?

I think you need to be more specific ... "alternative" for what?
There are lots of semiconducting materials.
There are ways to build electric circuits without using semiconductors too.

What are the ways to build electric circuits without using semiconductors? thx

Use vacuum tubes.

Before semiconductors, the same roles were played by thermionic valves: vacuum tubes.

Non-semiconducting circuit elements are "conductors", "resistors", and insulators.
Clever arrangements of conductors and resistors can be made to do all kinds of clever things.
Thermionic valves, for example, use many different conductors and resistors and insulators together to achieve their effects.
Like I said - you need to be specific.

thanks

Another alternative is to use brain matter.

Please check your PMs. We require that you show some effort when asking schoolwork-type questions. Thank you.
