Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around recommendations for laptops suitable for engineering students, particularly focusing on budget options around $1,000. Participants explore compatibility with engineering software, especially in the context of mechanical engineering.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about suitable laptops for mechanical engineering, expressing a preference for Mac but noting concerns about software compatibility.
  • Another participant asks for clarification on the specific engineering software being considered, mentioning that MATLAB works well on Mac and that open-source alternatives are also viable.
  • A third participant reiterates the question about software and mentions Solidworks as a known requirement, indicating that this will be their first year using such software.
  • A different participant acknowledges that many engineering students use MATLAB for numerical computations, noting that while it does not run natively on macOS, it can operate on a Mac if booted into Windows.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express varying opinions on the suitability of Mac versus Windows laptops for engineering students, with no consensus on the best option or specific models. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best laptop choice.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not provided a comprehensive list of required software, and there may be assumptions regarding the compatibility of various software with different operating systems.

Hi all,

What laptop would you recommend for a mechanical engineering student? I really like Mac but I hear that engineering software is almost all Windows.

Are there any good engineering laptops for around $1,000 that you could recommend?

What kinds of engineering software are you consdering?

I know Matlab works on mac quite well and even the open source versions work too.

To be honest I don't have a comprehensive list. I know I'll be using Solidworks, at least. This will be my first year coming up.
