SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on recommended resources for learning about telescopes and the physics of astronomy. Participants suggest free online materials, such as the Celestron Telescope Basics PDF and a PowerPoint from the University of Delaware, as foundational resources. For practical experience, joining a local astronomy club is emphasized as a way to enhance observational skills. The conversation also highlights the importance of clarifying whether the interest is practical or academic in nature.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic understanding of observational astronomy
  • Familiarity with telescope components and functions
  • Interest in the physics underlying astronomical observations
  • Access to online educational resources
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore the Celestron Telescope Basics PDF for foundational knowledge
  • Review the University of Delaware's telescope PowerPoint presentation
  • Join a local astronomy club for hands-on observational experience
  • Research academic texts on the physics of telescopes and astronomy

What sort of level are you looking for?

Here are some free basic online resources that aren't bad: http://www.celestron.com/c3/images/files/downloads/1297801757_telescopebasics.pdf . http://www.physics.udel.edu/~jlp/classweb2/directory/powerpoint/telescopes.pdf

Do you just want to do/learn about observational astronomy? In that case your best bet is to a join a local club or organization. Experience actually doing, and learning from those who do, observational astronomy will greatly speed up the learning process.

If you're interested from an academic standpoint, please clarify.
