Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around seeking recommendations for companion books to Wald's "General Relativity" for a graduate-level course. Participants share various resources that may aid in understanding the material better.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant finds Wald difficult to read and seeks a companion book to aid in problem sets.
  • Another participant recommends Sean Carroll's lecture notes and his textbook "Spacetime and Geometry," noting that they provide good prose explanations and a slower pace compared to Wald.
  • It is mentioned that Misner, Thorne, and Wheeler's "Gravitation" could be a good resource, although it is out of print and expensive.
  • A suggestion is made to consider Geroch's lecture notes, which are acknowledged by Wald in his preface.
  • Another participant expresses support for Carroll's work.
  • A link to Blau's lecture notes on General Relativity is shared as an additional resource.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the usefulness of Carroll's materials, while other suggestions like Geroch and Blau are also presented without clear consensus on a single best option.

Contextual Notes

Some participants note the varying levels of accessibility and pace in the recommended materials, which may affect their suitability as companions to Wald.

Who May Find This Useful

Graduate students studying general relativity or those seeking supplementary resources to enhance their understanding of Wald's text.

I'm taking a general relativity class and the professor is really good. When I'm in class I understand everything he is saying. However when it is time to do problems sets from Wald I struggle a bit because I find Wald hard to read. I'm not saying Wald is bad but I feel like I can benefit if I had a companion book. Any ideas. Btw this is a graduate class.

Thanks

I recommend Sean Carroll's lecture notes:

https://arxiv.org/abs/gr-qc/9712019

He later expanded and refined them into his textbook Spacetime and Geometry: An Introduction to General Relativity. That textbook is a bit expensive, and any gaps in the notes it fills are more than covered by Wald, which you already have.

If you have a good university library, they might have Misner, Thorne, and Wheeler's Gravitation, which is also excellent. They are pretty verbose, so their text is often good to go to for expanded explanations of various points. I can't recommend it to buy right now, because it is out of print and used copies are ridiculously expensive.

The main advantage to both of these as a companion to Wald is their good prose explanations and slower pace.
