what's the average distance between nitrogen molecules at STP?

The average distance between nitrogen molecules at Standard Temperature and Pressure (STP) can be calculated by dividing the mass density of nitrogen (1.25 kg/m³) by its molecular mass (28e-3 kg/mol) to determine the number of molecules per unit volume. The cube root of this value provides the average distance, which is approximately 1.16e-8 meters. The discussion highlights the importance of using the correct density for nitrogen rather than lead, as well as the need for careful unit cancellation in calculations.
PREREQUISITESStudents in chemistry or physics, researchers in gas behavior, and anyone interested in molecular spacing and properties of gases at STP.
Theelectricchild said:I seem to have the same problem. I know that rho lead = 1.25 kg/m^3 at STP, then i divide by 28e-3 kg/mol to get molec/volume. Then i cube root this to get molec/length = 3.5 approximately. Then using the pressure in a gas equation I get l = 4.107e-8m, but i cannot get units to cancel here to get a length. I end up with something like 1.16e-8 meteres distance between the molecules--- not sure if that's right. Thanks for the ehlp.
