What is the Function of Polar Bodies?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the potential functions of polar bodies in genetics, including their roles in embryonic development and whether they have any functional significance or are merely vestigial structures. The scope includes theoretical considerations and implications for embryology.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant notes that polar bodies may have diagnostic uses and suggests that their nuclei can be inserted into enucleated eggs to produce viable zygotes.
  • Another participant mentions a discussion from a lecture indicating that the second polar body might be necessary for the cleavage of the embryo, contributing to its polarity.
  • A participant questions the mechanism by which one of the cells becomes a polar body, wondering if this process is random or determined by some criteria.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express curiosity and share various hypotheses regarding the functions of polar bodies, but there is no consensus on their significance or the mechanisms involved.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the functional roles of polar bodies remain unverified, and the discussion does not resolve the question of whether their formation is random or determined.

hi

our genetics teacher has asked us about possible functions of polar bodies (if they are unfunctional, why do not they fully disappear but limit their smallness in some way; etc) and I could only find some diagnostic usages of polar bodies and that their nuclei could be inserted into enucleated eggs to produce viable zygotes.

I also wonder if there is any mechanism for determining which of the cells will become the polar body or if it's completely random.

does anybody know anything about this subject?

thanks a lot
in our lecture we discussed some functions of polar bodies. an interesting one was that second polar body may be required for cleavage of the embryo(creating the polarity of it)

cool, I didn't know that!
