Why do circuit elements have specific symbols?

SUMMARY

The symbols for circuit elements such as capacitors, resistors, and inductors are standardized for clarity and functionality. Capacitors are represented by two parallel lines, reflecting their structure of two plates, while inductors are symbolized by a coiled line, representing a coil of wire. Resistors have different symbols in the US and ISO/European standards; the US uses a zigzag symbol, while the ISO standard employs a rectangular box. These symbols are designed to convey the fundamental characteristics and functions of the components they represent.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic electrical components: capacitors, resistors, inductors
  • Familiarity with circuit diagram conventions
  • Knowledge of ISO and US electrical symbol standards
  • Basic principles of electrical flow and resistance
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the differences between ISO and US electrical symbols
  • Explore the physical principles behind capacitors and inductors
  • Learn about circuit diagram creation using software like Fritzing or Eagle
  • Study the historical development of electrical symbols in engineering
USEFUL FOR

Electrical engineering students, educators, and professionals involved in circuit design and analysis will benefit from this discussion.

Homework Statement

I wanted to ask why the symbols of capacitor , resistor and inductor is such which they have..?? Why are we denoting capacitor by 2 parallel plates why not 2 zig-zag plates..and same for inductor??

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

As much I got , resistor has such symbol as it acts as a barrir to flow of electrons..

The simplest capacitor would be two parallel plates at a fixed distance from each other, so the || symbol makes more sense than two zigzag shapes. An inductor is essentially a coil of wire, so the symbol for an inductor captures that idea. I'm not sure why they chose a sawtooth symbol for resistors, although its rough shape does suggest an obstacle.

The ISO/European and US symbols for a resistor are different. The US uses the "zigzag" symbol. The ISO/European symbol is a rectangular box.
