Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the limitations of Microsoft Word's equation editor in relation to LaTeX code. Participants explore the functionality of Word's equation editor and the challenges faced when trying to use LaTeX within it.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses frustration with Microsoft Word's equation editor, noting that some LaTeX codes do not work and inquiring about faster methods for inserting equations.
  • Another participant seeks clarification on what "MS" refers to, indicating a need for definitions in the discussion.
  • A participant confirms that LaTeX code does not work in Word, suggesting that this is an inherent limitation of the software.
  • It is pointed out that Word's equation editor does not utilize LaTeX, implying that it is not designed to support LaTeX syntax.
  • One participant questions the expectation for LaTeX to work in Word's equation editor, emphasizing that it is not a built-in code module.
  • A suggestion is made that MathType, a separate software, can export equations in LaTeX format, which can then be used elsewhere.
  • Another participant reiterates the point that Word has its own language for equations, comparing the situation to running incompatible programming languages in different environments.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that Microsoft Word's equation editor does not support LaTeX code, but there are differing views on the implications and reasons behind this limitation. The discussion remains unresolved regarding potential solutions or alternatives for users who prefer LaTeX.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about user familiarity with LaTeX and Microsoft Word's functionalities are present. The discussion does not address the specific limitations of the equation editor in detail or explore the full capabilities of MathType.

Homework Statement

I tried MS's "insert equations", but i find that some LaTeX codes don't work and I have to manually click. Is there a faster way?

For those of us who don't know what you mean, define "MS".

Microsoft's equation editor?

LaTeX code doesn't work in Word. Isn't that the point? :P

But MS's equation editor doesn't USE LaTeX. Obviously some LaTeX wouldn't work in Word's equation editor.

Exactly. Why should it? MS's EE (just to add confusion) isn't a code module built into Word (W), so why should LaTeX work with it?

MathType (Equation Editor's big brother which you have to buy separately) can export to the clipboard in LaTeX, which you can then paste into PF's editing window.

No, Microsoft Word. Why can't i just drag the images?

Because Word doesn't use Latex code. It has it's own language.

It's like asking why can't I run Visual Basic code in a Bash terminal.
