Why Some Materials Are Sensitive to Gases & How Doping Affects Them

AI Thread Summary
Certain materials like ZnO, SnO, and Pt are sensitive to gases due to their unique electronic properties and surface reactions that facilitate gas adsorption and interaction. In contrast, materials such as Si, Ge, InP, and GaAs lack these properties, making them less responsive to gas exposure. Doping can enhance the sensitivity of materials by introducing additional charge carriers or altering the electronic structure, which improves gas interaction. The referenced paper, "Metal Oxide Gas Sensors: Sensitivity and Influencing Factors," provides further insights into these mechanisms. Understanding these factors is crucial for developing effective gas sensors.

hi.. please tell me that
1) why some materials like ZnO, SnO, Pt, etc r sensitive to gases and others like Si, Ge,
InP, GaAs, etc r not sensitive to gases.
2) how doping increase the sensitivity of a certain material to certain gases.
