AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on a high school sophomore interested in pursuing a career in software engineering but who missed the opportunity to enroll in an engineering program due to timing. The individual is currently taking Advanced Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry and Pre-AP Physics and seeks advice on which classes to take that would align with their engineering interests. They express frustration about not being in the engineering class but later mention receiving guidance from their school on suitable courses to support their aspirations in engineering.

I don't know what type yet, but I like computers, so I am thinking of probably software engineer. I am a sophomore in High School, and I am taking Advanced Pre-Calc/Trig and Pre-AP Physics. There is an engineering program at our school, but unfortunately, I didn't sign up because over the summer is when I developed interest for engineering, and by that time, it was too late to join the engineering class :( ( you have to have joined by 9th grade). So I was wondering what type of classes would be geared toward engineering, now that I am not in the actual engineering class *grr*?

never mind, got an answer from school.

I’ve been looking through the curricula of several European theoretical/mathematical physics MSc programs (ETH, Oxford, Cambridge, LMU, ENS Paris, etc), and I’m struck by how little emphasis they place on advanced fundamental courses. Nearly everything seems to be research-adjacent: string theory, quantum field theory, quantum optics, cosmology, soft matter physics, black hole radiation, etc. What I don’t see are the kinds of “second-pass fundamentals” I was hoping for, things like...
TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
