Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the decision of whether to pursue a PhD immediately after a bachelor's degree or to complete a master's degree first. Participants explore the implications of each path on future job applications and academic opportunities.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions the significance of having a master's degree versus a bachelor's degree when applying for jobs after obtaining a PhD.
  • Another participant suggests that if the PhD opportunity aligns with the individual's goals, it may be wise to pursue it immediately, noting that the absence of a master's degree may not be detrimental if the PhD is completed successfully.
  • A different viewpoint highlights that many professors in mathematics and physics typically obtain a master's degree before entering graduate school, suggesting that a master's may provide a safer route or enhance chances of admission to a good PhD program.
  • One participant ultimately decides to complete the master's degree first, indicating that it will allow for a more informed decision regarding commitment to a PhD later.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing opinions on the value of a master's degree compared to a bachelor's degree in the context of pursuing a PhD and future job applications. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best path forward.

Contextual Notes

Participants' views are influenced by personal experiences and perceptions of academic pathways, with no consensus on the necessity or advantages of obtaining a master's degree before a PhD.

I'm currently in my third year of a 4 year masters course, however I've been offered a place on a PhD scheme which would mean me graduating with a Bsc instead of a masters and starting the PhD right away. My question is: Does having a masters as well as a PhD differ significantly from having a Bsc and a PhD when applying for jobs?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

If the PhD scheme is exactly what you want then go for it - it may not be there in a years time. If you get the PhD then no one will care if you have an MSc or not. If you fail the PhD you will, almost certainly, be able to write it up as an MSc - but this doesn't make much sense if you already have an MSc!

Many professors in math/phys get MSc before grad school; I guess it has to do with the pacing you want to go at. MSc is "safer" probably or enhances your chance to get into a good grad school if you need to prove yourself because of less than desirable grades/research as an undergrad. Just my take on it =P

Ok thankyou both for the advice I have decided to do the masters as it is in a similar topic so I will be able to decide at the end of that whether I want to commit to a PhD in it.

Thanks Again
