Admissions Defer Grad Admission for more Undergrad Time?

Getting a bachelors degree requires all sorts of other stuff outside the major, which is done now. I basically just need 4 CS courses. Can you explain what the risk is? I meant that I would be staying at the undergrad school, not getting a CS degree at the grad school.

Admissions Defer Grad Admission for more Undergrad Time?

I'm not sure what you mean, sorry :( Do you mean that my undergrad CS courses could transfer to elective credits in my grad program? Yeah, my grad school does have a fairly good CS program, but not as good as my undergrad school. Would it be better for me to just take CS courses there, while I'm...

Admissions Defer Grad Admission for more Undergrad Time?

Thanks for the response bluechic. I've thought a while about what you've said, and am leaning towards a year off. I don't think the major itself is too useful, but at least taking most of the CS courses that undergrads do, will probably be. I definitely have a similar situation. I want to learn...

Admissions Defer Grad Admission for more Undergrad Time?

There is an option to defer, but you're probably right that I should look at it more carefully. I'm just curious if, given that it works out, this is a good idea.

Admissions Defer Grad Admission for more Undergrad Time?

So I have been admitted to my first choice grad program in physics. However, I am worried about job security after my PhD, and was thinking of staying an extra semester or year at my undergrad institution to pick up a double major in CS. I already have 3/4 of the major (via applied maths...

Quick Question: Switching Fields in PhD

Well, I mentioned in OP that I would consider an MS. But thanks for the info regarding fields of EE. I'm most interested in solid state devices, semiconductors, etc. so i'll probably go for the PhD. I guess I don't want to be stuck with a PhD in physics, and not be able to get a job because my...

Quick Question: Switching Fields in PhD

I don't think i'll be able to get much of a job, given a physics BS. But I suppose I could try. And I'm not quite sure if I'm 'planning' on quitting. I'm just not sure if physics is for me, at this point. That's a good idea, but is it possible to get industry jobs (not finance) in that case...

Quick Question: Switching Fields in PhD

Okay, this makes me feel better then. How did you go about it, and do you think taking a gap year would be better than prematurely quitting? Yeah, I have taken some EE, but i'll probably need to take some undergrad courses during the EE program. Other threads about Phys -> EE seem to suggest...

Quick Question: Switching Fields in PhD

Nice. Was she in a related field of physics? Thanks, so I would have to re-apply to school, but for EE. Would waiting another year then applying to EE programs be better than doing this? I'm not sure if schools would see dropping out of a PhD program to start a different one, as good.

Quick Question: Switching Fields in PhD

I am a senior physics BS student, applying to programs in condensed matter and high energy physics at the moment. However, I have always been interested in doing an MS in EE. Its sort of late this year though, and I can't apply for EE programs now. But that got me thinking: is it possible to...

What to study in mathematics after taking basic math courses?

To OP, you are nowhere close to being able to specialize. Take two more years of general math, including more linear algebra, a couple semesters of analysis, some algebra, and a good topology course. You can always mix in stuff like intros to PDE, DG, graph theory, whatever here, but by no means...

Engineering Physics to Engineering - Is it possible?

That's good to hear. I don't have much in the way of labs, but I have taken an intro signals course, a circuits course and two solid state courses (those were physics though). If I take the upper-level signals and systems course and a semiconductor course, would these be enough to qualify for an...

Engineering Physics to Engineering - Is it possible?

Hmm, that thread is giving me mixed messages. At least it seems that its possible to get an EE MS with a physics BS. I didn't know if its worth it or not, though. Would I be better off getting a PhD in materials science or solid state if I want to work in industrial research?

Engineering Physics to Engineering - Is it possible?

Hello physics forums! I'm a third year physics student (also double majoring in math), and after reading some (recent) threads regarding the viability of academic careers, am rather scared and confused as to what my future holds. I was originally interested in engineering (EE), but after my...

    Advanced Linear Algebra Book Recommendation

I'm a big fan of Roman, and seeing as you know almost everything in Halmos from Axler (if not then the first few chapters of Roman will clear that up), there is pretty much no point to reading it, as Micromass said. Greub's 'Multilinear Algebra' is also a good companion for tensors and whatnot.
