Byron,Fuller)question-spherical harmonics & associated legendre funct.

In summary, the conversation is about equations 5.71 and 5.72 and whether the manipulations done were using algebra or trigonometry. The person is also looking for more examples, readings, or exercises to understand the concepts better. They mention having trouble with the symbols in the equations. Another person joined the conversation and asked for clarification on which equations were being discussed. The original person modified the image to make it clearer, and it was mentioned that the manipulations involved multiplying and dividing each term by sin^(|m|) \theta. The question was raised on where the person learned to manipulate equations in this way and if it was related to trigonometry or algebra.

Hello,

Question is about equation 5.71 ---to-----5.72

All that was done is algebra or trigonometry?
Where do I find such more example or reading or exercises.

I apologize for not printing the actual equations, there were too many symbols in them.

Thanks.

Ok, so I was able to scan the book and put equation in the image.

Its is attached to this post.

Thanks

Well, you were able to scan most of the page. It's not clear which equations you are talking about, though.

He multiplied and divided each term of the sum by sin^(|m|) \theta.

Why he felt the need?
Where did he learn to manipulate equation like this? Or how can I learn it, is trigonometry or algebra?

1. What are spherical harmonics?

Spherical harmonics are mathematical functions that are used to describe the behavior of wave-like phenomena in three-dimensional space. They are commonly used in many fields of science, such as physics, chemistry, and engineering.

2. What are associated Legendre functions?

Associated Legendre functions are a special type of spherical harmonics that are used to describe the angular dependence of a wave in spherical coordinates. They are commonly used in quantum mechanics and electromagnetism.

3. How are spherical harmonics and associated Legendre functions related?

Spherical harmonics and associated Legendre functions are closely related, as the latter can be thought of as a special case of the former. Associated Legendre functions are used to describe the angular part of a wave, while spherical harmonics describe the full three-dimensional behavior of a wave.

4. What is the significance of spherical harmonics and associated Legendre functions in science?

Spherical harmonics and associated Legendre functions are important tools in many areas of science, as they allow us to describe and understand the behavior of waves in three-dimensional space. They are used in a wide range of applications, including quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and geophysics.

5. How are spherical harmonics and associated Legendre functions used in practical applications?

Spherical harmonics and associated Legendre functions have many practical applications, such as in the analysis of satellite data for mapping the Earth's magnetic and gravitational fields, in computer graphics for creating realistic 3D images, and in signal processing for analyzing and filtering data. They are also used in solving differential equations and boundary value problems in physics and engineering.
