By this I mean machines that put more energy out than is put in.

IT IS POSSIBLE TO MAKE A PERPETUAL MOTION MACHINE.
Warning: the US Patent Office is somewhat demanding in their requirement that a PPM work before awarding such a patent. However, one resourceful chap was able to sue to have his device tested and won - but it failed the test.
