So, nearly every math professor I've ever happened to know who is an American got his or her PhD from one of about a dozen places, all of which are great, hallowed names in mathematics. I am currently in a math PhD program which, while it is certainly not bad, is not one these great names, either. I want you to be brutally honest: am I totally screwed at ever having a serious math research career?
