Derivation reference request

In summary, the conversation discusses the derivation of the probability density function for the sample mean and the search for a similar derivation for the sample median. It is suggested to consult books on probability or mathematical statistics, such as Bickel/Dobson or Hogg/Craig, for more information on the asymptotic normality result. A more rigorous approach can also be found in "Approximation Theorems of Mathematical Statistics" by Serfling.

I am familiar with the derivation of the probability density function of the sample mean but was looking for an equivalent derivation for the sample median. Does anyone know of a good, clear derivation of this PDF?

Thanks,

Natski

There are two situations. If the sample size is odd, then the median is the middle order statistic and you can immediately write down its pdf.

For the asymptotic normality result, you can look in books on probability or mathematical statistics. Bickel/Dobson have a text that is slightly higher level than Hogg/Craig. For a much more rigorous approach you can look at "Approximation Theorems of Mathematical Statistics" by Serfling.

1. What is a derivation reference request?

A derivation reference request is a formal inquiry made by a researcher or scientist to obtain information about the original source or derivation of a particular concept, theory, or data. It is often used in academic or scientific settings to ensure accuracy and credibility of information.

2. Why is a derivation reference request important?

A derivation reference request is important because it allows researchers to verify the reliability and validity of information. By tracing the derivation of a concept or data, it helps to ensure that the information is accurate and has not been misrepresented or manipulated.

3. How do I make a derivation reference request?

To make a derivation reference request, you can start by identifying the specific concept or data you are seeking information on. Then, you can reach out to the author or original source of the information and request details about its derivation. You may also consult with other experts in the field or conduct further research to obtain the necessary information.

4. What information should be included in a derivation reference request?

A derivation reference request should include the specific concept or data being requested, the reason for the request, and any relevant details or context. It should also include contact information for the requester and a deadline for a response, if applicable.

5. Is it appropriate to make a derivation reference request?

Yes, it is appropriate to make a derivation reference request in academic or scientific settings. It is a common practice to ensure the accuracy and credibility of information, and it is considered a professional and respectful way to obtain information from other researchers or sources.
