Should Physics Forums Have a Solution Manual Requests Section?

In summary, the conversation discusses the suggestion of creating a section for sharing solution manuals, textbooks, and programs on a physics forum. However, it is mentioned that these requests are considered cheating and not allowed on the forum. Instead, there is a science book section with recommendations, as most current textbooks and software cannot be shared online due to copyright laws.

Hello,

This is the first post in physics forums and I would suggest that there should be a solution manual requests and textbooks section in every forum or at least a section for sharing manuals, books and programs that can help the members of this forum.

We consider requests for solution manuals as cheating, we do not allow it on the forum. There is a science book section with recommendations. Most current textbooks and software are copyrighted and cannot be shared online.

1. What is a solution manual?

A solution manual is a supplemental guide that contains step-by-step solutions to the problems or exercises in a textbook. It is usually created by the textbook author or publisher and is meant to assist students in understanding and practicing the concepts taught in the textbook.

2. Why do students request solution manuals?

Students may request solution manuals to help them study and prepare for exams, to check their understanding of the material, or to use as a reference for completing homework assignments.

3. Are solution manuals the same as cheating?

No, solution manuals are meant to be used as a study aid and should not be used as a means of cheating. It is important for students to still attempt to solve problems on their own and use the solution manual as a tool for understanding and checking their work.

4. Can anyone access solution manuals?

Solution manuals are typically only available to instructors or students who have purchased the corresponding textbook. However, there are also websites that offer solution manuals for free, but it is important to use these resources ethically and not rely on them as a means of cheating.

5. Is it okay to solely rely on solution manuals for studying?

No, it is not recommended to solely rely on solution manuals for studying. It is important for students to actively engage with the material and attempt to solve problems on their own in order to fully understand the concepts and be prepared for exams.
