The rate of temperature change

In summary, the conversation discusses how to calculate the rate of temperature change using the power input and specific heat capacity of an object. However, it is noted that the mass of the object is also necessary for an accurate calculation. The solution also assumes that temperature gradients within the object are negligible and recommends checking the units. Additionally, the conversation mentions the importance of heat conduction and heat capacity for finite size objects, which may require the use of differential equations and Newton's law of cooling.

I'd like to ask how to calculate the rate at which the temperature changes, knowing the power input and the specific heat capacity of an object?

Hi veritassium, welcome to PF. You can't, without also knowing the mass of the object. The rate of temperature change is the power input divided by the specific heat capacity and the mass. Note that this solution assumes that temperature gradients within the object are negligible. Make sure to check the units.

Thank you very much

Also, the heat conduction as well as heat capacity is important for finite size objects. Yo will need differential equations to solve these problems.

You also got to use Newton's law of cooling...much more to this.

Related to The rate of temperature change

1. What is the rate of temperature change?

The rate of temperature change refers to the speed at which the temperature of a specific area or the Earth as a whole is increasing or decreasing over time. It is typically measured in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit per unit of time, such as years or decades.

2. How is the rate of temperature change determined?

The rate of temperature change is determined through data analysis of temperature records from various sources, such as weather stations, satellites, and ocean buoys. Scientists also use complex mathematical models to forecast future temperature changes based on current trends and data.

3. What factors affect the rate of temperature change?

The rate of temperature change is influenced by a variety of natural and human factors. These include changes in solar activity, volcanic eruptions, greenhouse gas emissions, land use changes, and natural cycles such as El Niño and La Niña.

4. Why is the rate of temperature change important?

The rate of temperature change is important because it has significant impacts on our environment, economy, and society as a whole. It can lead to extreme weather events, sea level rise, changes in ecosystems, and disruptions to food and water supplies.

5. Can the rate of temperature change be slowed or reversed?

While the rate of temperature change is currently increasing, it can be slowed or reversed through collective efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and implement sustainable practices. However, it will require global cooperation and immediate action to effectively mitigate the effects of climate change.
