In summary, the conversation discusses the concept of balance while riding a bicycle or skating. It is noted that angular momentum plays a role in balancing while riding a bicycle, but in the case of skating, the mechanics are different. The center of gravity and the use of horizontal and vertical projections are also mentioned as factors in maintaining balance while skating, which is said to be similar to walking.

Hi, I have a question:
How does people keep balance when they riding a bicycle or skating? Moving seems to be essential, when riding a bicycle, we can argue that the wheel is rotating, so it's angular momentum keeps the balance. But in the case of skate, nothing is rotating, but people seem to be able to keep balance better when he is moving forward. How to explain it?

Thank you very much and happy new year!

Doesn't skating involve horizontal and vertical projections? Isn't the vertical projection independent of the horizontal projection? What about the center of gravity, doesn't it play a pivotal role in the balance of a body?

With skating, you keep your balance exactly the same as if you are walking - it's just a little tougher because the contact area for each foot is essentially 1-dimensional.

1. How does riding a bicycle or skating benefit my health?

Both riding a bicycle and skating are great forms of cardiovascular exercise. They can improve your heart health, strengthen your muscles, and increase your overall endurance. They also help with balance and coordination.

2. Can riding a bicycle or skating help me lose weight?

Yes, both activities can help with weight loss. They burn calories and increase your metabolism, leading to weight loss. However, it's important to also maintain a healthy diet and incorporate other forms of exercise for optimal weight loss.

3. Is one activity better for the environment than the other?

Both riding a bicycle and skating are environmentally friendly forms of transportation. They do not produce any emissions and do not contribute to air pollution. However, skating may require more maintenance of the equipment, leading to potential waste.

4. Are there any safety precautions I should take while riding a bicycle or skating?

It is important to wear proper safety gear, such as a helmet and knee pads, while riding a bicycle or skating. It is also important to follow traffic rules and signals while riding on the road. Additionally, make sure to regularly check and maintain your equipment for safety.

5. Can riding a bicycle or skating improve my mental health?

Yes, both activities can have positive effects on your mental health. They can help reduce stress, improve mood, and increase self-esteem. Being outdoors and getting fresh air while engaging in physical activity can also contribute to improved mental well-being.
