Storage reservoir is continuously filled through a pipe

In summary, the problem involves a continuously filling storage reservoir with a pipe delivering 2.2cfs, circular in shape with a diameter of 20 ft and height of 12 ft. A pump drains out 350 cubic feet of water during the last 5 minutes of every 20 minute interval. The task is to determine the time it takes for the tank to overflow, assuming it is initially empty. The flow rate and volume of the tank are key factors in solving this problem.

Homework Statement

A storage reservoir is continuously filled through a pipe delivering 2.2cfs. The reservoir is circular in shape with a diameter of 20 ft. The height of the tank is 12ft. A pump operates for the last 5 minutes of successive 20 minute intervals, draining out 350 cubic feet of water. Determine the time it takes for the tank to overflow, assuming that it is initially empty.

Homework Equations

v= delta x/ delta t

The Attempt at a Solution

WOW! way too much information! i would try and figure the velocity, but the 350 cubic feet has no time association.

You're working with a flow rate (volume per unit time). You have a flow rate into the tank and a flow rate out of the tank. And you can calculate the volume of the tank.

did you read the whole problem? i think it is a little more than complicated than you make it sound.

1. How does a storage reservoir continuously fill through a pipe?

A storage reservoir is continuously filled through a pipe by utilizing a constant inflow of water through the pipe. This can be achieved by having a pump or other water source constantly supplying water through the pipe into the reservoir.

2. What is the purpose of continuously filling a storage reservoir?

The purpose of continuously filling a storage reservoir is to maintain a consistent water level in the reservoir. This is important for ensuring a steady supply of water for various purposes such as irrigation, drinking water, and industrial processes.

3. What factors affect the rate of filling for a storage reservoir?

The rate of filling for a storage reservoir can be affected by several factors including the diameter and length of the pipe, the pressure of the inflow water, and the size of the reservoir itself. Other factors such as the presence of any blockages or leaks in the pipe can also impact the rate of filling.

4. How is the water level in a storage reservoir controlled during continuous filling?

The water level in a storage reservoir can be controlled during continuous filling by using a float valve or other type of control mechanism. This device can automatically adjust the inflow of water to maintain a desired water level in the reservoir.

5. Are there any potential risks or concerns with continuously filling a storage reservoir?

One potential risk of continuously filling a storage reservoir is the potential for overflow if the inflow rate is too high. This can lead to flooding and other water damage. It is important to regularly monitor and maintain the inflow rate to prevent any potential risks or concerns.
