Electrical Circuit: Finding Max/Min Voltage in 5 min

In summary, an electrical circuit is a closed loop through which an electric current can flow and is made up of various components connected by conductive wires. To find the maximum voltage, Ohm's Law or a voltmeter can be used. This is important for safety and efficiency, and can be done in a few minutes. The same methods can also be used to find the minimum voltage, which is crucial for understanding the circuit's behavior.

The problem is:
"In an electrical circuit, the voltage, V volts, as a function of time, t minutes, is given by V = 12 - 9t + 2t^2. Determine the greatest and least values of voltage during the first 5 min. When do these values occur?"

The answers given are exact.
Least: 1.875 V @ 2.25 min
Most: 17 V @ 5 min

Well I know how to get the max, but the min?

Thanks!

The graph is a parabola. You can find the vertex if you remember how, or you can find where the derivative is 0.

Based on the given equation, we can use the first derivative test to find the minimum voltage during the first 5 minutes. The first derivative of V with respect to t is 2t-9. Setting this equal to 0 and solving for t gives us t=4.5 minutes. Plugging this value into the original equation, we get a minimum voltage of 1.875 V at 2.25 minutes. Therefore, the minimum voltage during the first 5 minutes occurs at 1.875 V at 2.25 minutes. The maximum voltage of 17 V occurs at 5 minutes, as given. It is important to note that these values are exact and may vary slightly depending on the precision of the calculations.

What is an electrical circuit?

An electrical circuit is a closed loop through which an electric current can flow. It is made up of various components, such as resistors, capacitors, and inductors, which are connected by conductive wires or traces.

How do you find the maximum voltage in an electrical circuit?

To find the maximum voltage in an electrical circuit, you can use Ohm's Law, which states that voltage is equal to current multiplied by resistance. You can also use a voltmeter to directly measure the voltage at different points in the circuit.

What is the purpose of finding the maximum voltage in an electrical circuit?

Finding the maximum voltage in an electrical circuit is important for determining the safety and efficiency of the circuit. It can also help to identify any potential issues, such as voltage drops or overloads, that may need to be addressed.

How long does it typically take to find the maximum voltage in an electrical circuit?

The time it takes to find the maximum voltage in an electrical circuit can vary depending on the complexity of the circuit and the tools being used. However, with the proper equipment and knowledge, it can typically be done in a matter of minutes.

Can the minimum voltage in an electrical circuit be found in the same way as the maximum voltage?

Yes, the same methods used to find the maximum voltage in an electrical circuit can also be used to find the minimum voltage. It is important to measure both the maximum and minimum voltages in order to understand the overall behavior of the circuit.
