Homework Statement
What has more ionic character NaF or NaCl?Covalent?
Homework Equations
Measured Dipole moment of NaF 27.2e^-30
Measured dipole moment of NaCl 30e^-30
Dipole moment=qd
Fractional ionic character=measured dipole moment/qd
Equilibrium separation of NaCl =.236nm
Equilibrium separation of NaF=.193nm
The Attempt at a Solution
What I did is this factional ionic character of NaF is 27.2e^-30/((1.6e^-19)(.193e^-9))= 88% and NaCl is 30e^-30/((1.6e^-19)(.236e^-9))= 79% so what I would take from this is that NaCl is more ionic because of the lower percentage and NaF is more covalent due to a a fractional ionic of 88%. However this is confusing me because I would think based on electro negativity difference NaF would be ionic because higher at 3.05 vs 2.23. Which is right? Also which has more ionic character?
