Pipe bend fluid mechanics problem

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on a fluid mechanics problem involving a pipe with a 180° horizontal bend, where the parameters include a discharge rate of 0.30 m³/s, a pipe diameter of 20 cm, and a pressure of 100 kPa gage. Participants suggest using the momentum equation to determine the force required to hold the bend in place, which has a volume of 0.10 m³ and weighs 500 N. There is encouragement for the original poster to apply the momentum equation and share their calculations for further assistance. The conversation emphasizes the importance of correctly applying fluid mechanics principles to solve the problem. Engaging with the problem using the suggested equations is crucial for finding the solution.

Homework Statement

The pipe shown has a 180° horizontal bend in it as shown, and D is 20 cm. The
discharge of water (ρ = 1000 kg/m3)in the pipe and bend is 0.30 m3/s, and the
pressure in the pipe and bend is 100 kPa gage. If the bend volume is 0.10 m3 and
the bend itself weighs 500 N, what force must be applied at the flanges to hold the
bend in place?

"perhaps momentum equation?"

That is correct. Apply it and let's see your work.

It is easy ! come on !

Thread 'Have I solved this structural engineering equation correctly?'
Hi all, I have a structural engineering book from 1979. I am trying to follow it as best as I can. I have come to a formula that calculates the rotations in radians at the rigid joint that requires an iterative procedure. This equation comes in the form of: $$ x_i = \frac {Q_ih_i + Q_{i+1}h_{i+1}}{4K} + \frac {C}{K}x_{i-1} + \frac {C}{K}x_{i+1} $$ Where: ## Q ## is the horizontal storey shear ## h ## is the storey height ## K = (6G_i + C_i + C_{i+1}) ## ## G = \frac {I_g}{h} ## ## C...
