Resonance frequencies question (first and second resonance frequencies)

AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around calculating the first and second resonance frequencies for a whistle closed at one end. The initial formulas used were f1 = v/2L for the first frequency and f2 = v/L for the second frequency. However, these formulas are incorrect for a closed-end system. The correct approach involves using f1 = v/4L for the first resonance frequency and f2 = 3v/4L for the second. Properly applying these formulas will yield the correct resonance frequencies.

Trying to figure out how to go about solving this question, using these forumlas i tried to solve it but i didnt get the right answers

for frequency 1 i went with

f1=v/2L

for frequency 2 i went with

f2=v/L

any ideas on how to solve this?

The question says the whistle is closed at one end.

You had the right idea about how to answer the question, but you used the wrong formulas.

Thread 'Variable mass system : water sprayed into a moving container'
Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
