What is Calculator: Definition and 516 Discussions
An electronic calculator is typically a portable electronic device used to perform calculations, ranging from basic arithmetic to complex mathematics.
The first solid-state electronic calculator was created in the early 1960s. Pocket-sized devices became available in the 1970s, especially after the Intel 4004, the first microprocessor, was developed by Intel for the Japanese calculator company Busicom. They later became used commonly within the petroleum industry (oil and gas).
Modern electronic calculators vary from cheap, give-away, credit-card-sized models to sturdy desktop models with built-in printers. They became popular in the mid-1970s as the incorporation of integrated circuits reduced their size and cost. By the end of that decade, prices had dropped to the point where a basic calculator was affordable to most and they became common in schools.
Computer operating systems as far back as early Unix have included interactive calculator programs such as dc and hoc, and calculator functions are included in almost all personal digital assistant (PDA) type devices, the exceptions being a few dedicated address book and dictionary devices.
In addition to general purpose calculators, there are those designed for specific markets. For example, there are scientific calculators which include trigonometric and statistical calculations. Some calculators even have the ability to do computer algebra. Graphing calculators can be used to graph functions defined on the real line, or higher-dimensional Euclidean space. As of 2016, basic calculators cost little, but scientific and graphing models tend to cost more.
In 1986, calculators still represented an estimated 41% of the world's general-purpose hardware capacity to compute information. By 2007, this had diminished to less than 0.05%.
Finding the domain is easy with a graphing calculator but what if I was to do it without one. Is there a way to do it?
How would I find the domain of f(x)=(x-1)/(x^2+1)

Well, this August I will be an incoming freshman at college. I placed out of calculus 1 and 2, and will be starting with multivariable calculus, and then differential equations. I am well aware that professors do not allow the use of calculators on exams, but would still like to have one for...
I'm going to be a new physics major in the fall. I think a graphing calculator is almost a necessity, but how "hi-tech" do I need? The graphing calculators from TI range anywheres from $100-$150. Do I need to get top-of-the-line? I don't want to spend an extra $50 if I don't need to, but I...
Google has a neat calculator built into its search box. There is a good summary here:

Copy and paste the following queries to see it work:
Arithmetic operations:
sqrt((3*6/9)^2+7!)
Transcendental:

By getting high enough grades, I got my mom to agree to buy me a calculator to upgrade from my TI-86. So what calculator should I buy? Currently I'm in math 252 (calculus 3rd semester), and I plan to continue studying calculus. I consider myself to be technologically proficient and I am willing...
The original handheld calculator.

This was designed in Buchenwald, the German concentration camp, the first prototypes built from the original hand drawings worked. It was manufactured from 1948 till ~1970 when cheap electronic calculators came on the market.

If you own any type of TI calculator (82, 83, 83+, 86, 89, 92, etc.), you may not know that it can do a lot more than math! You can build a robot (http://smallrobot.com), collect data like distance, velocity and acceleration (http://www.eaiusa.com/mo__texas__instruments__calculators__CBL-CBR.htm...
escort offers a passport g-timer that advertises being capable of just mounting to your windshield, plugging in your power cord and calculating 0 - 60 time, quarter mile time, peak horsepower, and g-forces. is all that possible from just a windshield mounted unit not connected (other than the...
I'm starting college in a couple months now, and I would like to know which calculator I should get. I heard TI-92+ is nice, but unrealistic as many teachers won't let you use them on tests. 89's are a good alternative, but I have heard that HP's are better.
Right now I own a HP48gx. I'm...
