What is Machine: Definition and 966 Discussions

A machine is a human-made device that uses power to apply forces and control movement to perform an action. Machines can be driven by animals and people, by natural forces such as wind and water, and by chemical, thermal, or electrical power, and include a system of mechanisms that shape the actuator input to achieve a specific application of output forces and movement. They can also include computers and sensors that monitor performance and plan movement, often called mechanical systems.
Renaissance natural philosophers identified six simple machines which were the elementary devices that put a load into motion, and calculated the ratio of output force to input force, known today as mechanical advantage.Modern machines are complex systems that consist of structural elements, mechanisms and control components and include interfaces for convenient use. Examples include: a wide range of vehicles, such as automobiles, boats and airplanes; appliances in the home and office, including computers, building air handling and water handling systems; as well as farm machinery, machine tools and factory automation systems and robots.

Atwoods Machine - Mass Height Question

The problem reads as follows: Two masses are each initially 1.80 m above the ground, and the massless frictionless pulley is 4.8m above the ground. What maximum height does the lighter object reach after the system is released? It gave me a hint to find the acceleration and velocity at...

Exploring the Impossibility of a Perpetual Motion Machine

I'm not sure if I got the name right, but anyways... Suppose we have a nanoscopically small, but very clever device. (and with modern technology, this sort of thing is becoming almost practical...) It is basically just two compartments, with a hole in between. Contained in the compartments...

Why Does an Atwood's Machine Behave as It Does?

Okay, I had to do a problem concerning the Atwoods machine over the weekend. I'm not doing very well in Physics right now, and I don't have any friends in that class, so I thankfully found this place. I have already tried thinking about these problems... 1. If two objects of equal mass are...

Unlocking the Mystery: Exploring the Link Between Gravity and Magnetism

Did anyone ever see on TV or read about (I think it was released to the press sometime late last year) the scientists who built that electromagnet that counteracted the force of gravity? They put a couple of different pieces of organic material in it and they started floating, one of which was a...
