Armoured Cables: Tape vs Wire - Mechanical Properties

In summary, tape and wire armoured cables differ in their construction, with tape armoured cables having a layer of metal or plastic tape and wire armoured cables having a layer of steel wire. Wire armoured cables are considered to be stronger and less flexible due to the rigid steel wire, while tape armoured cables are more pliable. The installation process and resistance to external damage also vary between the two types, with tape armoured cables requiring special tools and wire armoured cables offering more protection due to the strength of the steel wire layer. However, the quality and thickness of the armour also play a role in determining the level of protection.

Hello guys , i have a question related to cable mechanical properties

you know power cables have armouring , which enhance the mechanical properties for the cable

the question is : what is the difference between the Tape armour and wire armour i know the difference in how they look like and the difference in construction but what i mean , when the tape armouring is preferred over wire armouring and vice verse

Thanks alot

1. What is the difference between tape and wire armoured cables?

The main difference between tape and wire armoured cables is the way they are constructed. Tape armoured cables have a layer of metal or plastic tape wrapped around the core of the cable, while wire armoured cables have a layer of steel wire braided around the core.

2. Which type of armoured cable is stronger?

In terms of mechanical strength, wire armoured cables are generally considered to be stronger than tape armoured cables. This is because the steel wire provides a more rigid and durable layer of protection compared to the tape.

3. Does the type of armour affect the flexibility of the cable?

Yes, the type of armour can affect the flexibility of the cable. Tape armoured cables tend to be more flexible than wire armoured cables due to the tape being more pliable. This can be beneficial in installations where the cable needs to bend or move frequently.

4. Are there any differences in the installation process for tape and wire armoured cables?

Yes, the installation process for tape and wire armoured cables can differ. Tape armoured cables may require the use of special tools to properly wrap and secure the tape while wire armoured cables may require more effort to bend and shape the steel wire around the core of the cable.

5. Which type of armoured cable is more resistant to external damage?

Both types of armoured cables offer protection against external damage, but wire armoured cables are generally more resistant due to the strength and durability of the steel wire layer. However, the type of armour alone does not determine the level of protection, as the quality and thickness of the armour also play a role.
