Electrostatic potential of a charged disk

In summary, finding the electrostatic potential of any point on a charged disk with radius R and surface charge density σ is a difficult problem, especially if the point is not at the center. While there are methods to find the potential at the origin and on the rim of the disk, finding it at any other point may require the use of Bessel functions, as shown in a scientific article.

It looks like a difficult problem iif you need to find it at a point other than at the centre.

I succeeded to get the electrostatic potential on the origin and on the rim of the disk but I'm still trying to get it anywhere on the disk

Related to Electrostatic potential of a charged disk

1. What is electrostatic potential?

Electrostatic potential is a measure of the amount of work required to move a unit positive charge from one point to another in an electric field.

2. How is electrostatic potential of a charged disk calculated?

The electrostatic potential of a charged disk can be calculated by using the equation V = k(Q/R), where V is the potential, k is the Coulomb's constant, Q is the charge on the disk, and R is the distance from the center of the disk.

3. What factors affect the electrostatic potential of a charged disk?

The electrostatic potential of a charged disk is affected by the charge on the disk, the distance from the center of the disk, and the surrounding electric field.

4. How does the electrostatic potential of a charged disk change as the distance from the center increases?

The electrostatic potential of a charged disk decreases as the distance from the center increases. This is because the electric field strength decreases with distance, leading to a lower potential.

5. What is the significance of the electrostatic potential of a charged disk?

The electrostatic potential of a charged disk is important in understanding the behavior of electric fields and how they interact with other charged particles. It is also used in various applications, such as in capacitors and electronic devices.
