I'm a math major interested in the field of quantum information science and quantum computing, but I'm unclear on what path to take to explore the field. The field is presented as being at the intersection of physics, computer science, and mathematics but it seems that a majority of the experts are either specialists in condensed matter theory/AMO physics or are computer scientists working in complexity theory/algorithms. There are some mathematicians who are prominent in the field like Peter Shor and Michael Freedman, but by and large I see more advice on how to enter the field through either physics or computer science, but not math.

My question is, as a math major, what courses would you recommend as indispensable if I decide I want to pursue a graduate degree in QC/QIS?

One of my lecturers who does research in quantum information theory said that anyone who wants to work on theory should learn as much number theory as possible
