In summary, when Coca-Cola and Crown Royal are mixed, the carbon dioxide in the Coca-Cola reacts with the alcohol in the Crown Royal, causing the drink to fizz and bubble. This reaction is harmless and does not pose any health risks. Similar eruptions can occur with other carbonated drinks mixed with alcohol. The eruptions cannot be prevented, but can be reduced by pouring the Coca-Cola slowly. The taste of the drink may be slightly affected, but should not significantly alter the overall taste.

I have noticed recently that when I pour coca-cola ( from a regular red can ) into a plastic cup then mix crown royal in it that this produces "eruptions", small streams of liquid shooting up from the surface of the drink. What is causing these? I have mixed drinks many times and never noticed this in any other combination

This could be similar to the known mentos-soda reaction, where the gum arabic in the mentos react with the soda gas.

.This phenomenon is actually quite common when mixing carbonated beverages with alcohol. The carbon dioxide gas in the soda creates pressure when mixed with the alcohol, causing the liquid to bubble and "erupt" from the surface. This is also known as the "nucleation effect" and can be seen in other combinations such as champagne and orange juice or beer and hard liquor. The amount of carbonation in the soda and the strength of the alcohol can affect the intensity of the eruptions. It is completely normal and safe, but it's always a good idea to mix drinks slowly to avoid spills. Cheers!

Related to Mysterious 'Eruptions' When Mixing Coca-Cola and Crown Royal

1. What causes the mysterious eruptions when mixing Coca-Cola and Crown Royal?

The eruptions are caused by the carbon dioxide in the Coca-Cola being released when it comes into contact with the alcohol in the Crown Royal. This creates a reaction that causes the drink to fizz and bubble.

2. Is it safe to mix Coca-Cola and Crown Royal?

Yes, it is safe to mix these two drinks. The reaction that causes the eruptions is harmless and does not pose any health risks.

3. Are there any other drinks that can create similar eruptions?

Yes, any carbonated drink mixed with an alcoholic beverage can create similar eruptions. This is because the carbon dioxide in the drink is released when it comes into contact with the alcohol.

4. Can the eruptions be prevented?

The eruptions cannot be prevented as they are a natural reaction between the carbon dioxide and alcohol. However, you can reduce the intensity of the eruptions by pouring the Coca-Cola slowly into the Crown Royal and allowing the bubbles to settle before adding more.

5. Will the taste of the drink be affected by the eruptions?

The taste of the drink may be slightly affected by the eruptions, as the carbon dioxide can cause the drink to become slightly more acidic. However, this should not significantly alter the overall taste of the drink.
