In summary, ratio is a way to compare two numbers and represent their relationship. To share an amount among three people, one can divide the total amount by 3 or use a ratio. A proportion is an equation stating that two ratios are equal. To solve ratio problems, one must identify known quantities and use the concept of equivalent ratios. Ratio can be used in real-life situations such as cooking, budgeting, and scientific experiments.

Homework Statement
Andreas, Isla and Paulo share some money in the ratios 3:2:5. The total amount of money that Isla and Paulo receive is £76 more than the amount of money that Andreas receives. Andreas buys a video game for £48.50 with some of his share of the money. Work out how much money Andreas has left from his share of the money when he has bought the video game.
Relevant Equations
3+2+5 = 10 parts
So 7 parts is worth £76 more than 3 parts which means that

4 parts = £76

So 1 part = £19

Therefore Andreas gets £57, Isla gets £38 and Paulo gets £95.

So Andreas has £57 - £48.50 = £8.50 left

Is this correct please?

What is ratio?

Ratio is a mathematical concept that compares the size or quantity of two or more quantities. It is expressed as a fraction or using the "colon" notation (e.g. 2:3).

How do you calculate ratio?

To calculate ratio, you need to divide the first quantity by the second quantity. For example, if you want to find the ratio of 6 apples to 3 oranges, you would divide 6 by 3 to get a ratio of 2:1.

How do you share an amount among 3 people using ratio?

To share an amount among 3 people using ratio, you would first add up the total amount to be shared. Then, divide that amount by the sum of the ratio numbers. This will give you the amount each person should receive. Finally, multiply that amount by each person's ratio number to determine their individual share.

What are some real-life examples of using ratio to share an amount among 3 people?

One example of using ratio to share an amount among 3 people is splitting a pizza between 3 friends. If the pizza costs $15 and the friends want to split it equally, each person would contribute $5 (the total amount divided by 3). Another example could be dividing a bag of candy among 3 siblings, where each sibling's ratio number represents the number of pieces of candy they should receive.

How is ratio different from proportion?

Ratio and proportion are closely related concepts, but they are not the same. Ratio compares two quantities, while proportion compares two ratios. In other words, ratio is a single comparison, while proportion is a comparison of two ratios. Additionally, proportions are typically used to solve problems, while ratios can be used for comparison or to find a missing quantity.
