Hi,

The photo shows some objects suspended on a power lines near an airfield

Here is the location of those objects on a map:

The 3 pink circles are the oranges balls in the photo. Which seem to be Aerial Marker Balls.

QUESTION: The pink triangle is the cone shown in the photo. What is this cone and what is its usage?

"The Tottenham/Volk airfield was purchased by a fill operator, under the guise that they need to bring in millions of cubic metres of commercial fill to improve a grass airfield." (Extract from the opening to a petition to stop fill and airfield improvement).
A temporary? grass landing strip has been built on earlier fill, 270 metres west, parallel with the original strip, while the old strip area is being filled.

The orange cone is in direct alignment with the new grass landing strip. The cone is on the upper wire. The balls mark the same power line, but across the end of the original runway. That suggests it is a cable warning marker, and a navigation marker, for the centre of the new (temporary?) runway.

1. How did the cone end up suspended on the power line?

Cones can end up suspended on power lines due to accidental actions such as being thrown up by individuals or being carried and dropped by birds. In some cases, they can also be blown by strong winds if they are lightweight enough.

2. What are the potential risks of a cone being suspended on a power line?

A cone on a power line can pose several risks including electrical hazards if the cone is conductive and comes into contact with live wires. It can also be a risk to utility workers who must remove it and a potential fire hazard if it causes the wires to short. Additionally, it can be a distraction or hazard to traffic if it falls.

3. How do utility companies remove objects like cones from power lines?

Utility companies typically use specialized equipment and trained professionals to safely remove objects from power lines. This might include using insulated tools, bucket trucks, and sometimes temporarily shutting down power to ensure the safety of the workers and the public.

4. Can a cone cause a power outage if it's on a power line?

Yes, a cone can potentially cause a power outage if it disrupts the line's integrity or causes a short circuit. The likelihood depends on the material of the cone and its position relative to the wires and other infrastructure.

5. What should I do if I see an object like a cone on a power line?

If you see any object, including a cone, suspended on a power line, you should not attempt to remove it yourself due to the high risk of electrical shock or other injuries. Instead, contact your local power utility company and report the location and nature of the obstruction so that professionals can handle the situation safely.
