Mount Merapi is the most active of Indonesia's 130 volcanos.

Balai Penyelidikan dan Pengembangan Teknologi Kebencanaan Geologi (BPPTKG) reported that an eruption at Merapi (on Java) continued during 17-23 November. The SW lava dome produced a total of 91 lava avalanches that descended the flanks; three traveled as far as 1.3 km down the upper part of the Boyong drainage and 88 traveled as far as 1.8 km down the upper Bebeng drainage. Minor morphological changes to the SW lava dome were identified in webcam images due to continuing lava effusion and collapses of material. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a scale of 1-4), and the public was warned to stay 3-7 km away from the summit, based on location.

The volcano's last major eruption in 2010 killed more than 300 people and forced the evacuation of some 280,000 residents.

Hoping for the best on this one! I visited the nearby large city of Yogyakarta last summer. Lots of ruins in the area too.

Eleven climbers killed as Indonesia volcano erupts, search on hold

https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-...o-erupts-survivors-found-official-2023-12-04/

JAKARTA, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Eleven climbers were found dead in Indonesia on Monday following the eruption of the Marapi volcano in West Sumatra, a rescue official said, as a search to find 12 more missing was temporarily halted over safety concerns.

Three survivors were found on Monday along with the bodies of the 11 climbers, among 75 in the area at the time of Sunday's eruption, said Jodi Haryawan, spokesperson for the search and rescue team.

1. How many climbers went missing during the 2023 Merapi eruption?

During the 2023 Merapi eruption, a total of five climbers were reported missing. They were part of a larger group that was caught off-guard by the sudden volcanic activity while attempting to reach the summit.

2. What caused the climbers to go missing?

The climbers went missing after being overwhelmed by a fast-moving pyroclastic flow, which is a high-density mix of hot lava blocks, pumice, ash, and volcanic gas. This lethal flow is known for its rapid speed and high temperatures, making it almost impossible to outrun.

3. Were there any survivors from the group of missing climbers?

Yes, there were survivors from the group. Two climbers who had initially been reported missing were later found by rescue teams. They survived by finding shelter in a natural cave and were rescued with minor injuries and severe dehydration.

4. What were the challenges faced in the search and rescue operations?

The search and rescue operations were extremely challenging due to the ongoing volcanic activity, which included frequent ash falls and sporadic eruptions. The harsh terrain, covered with volcanic ash, and the reduced visibility further complicated the efforts. Additionally, the risk of subsequent eruptions posed a constant threat to the rescue teams.

5. What measures are being taken to prevent future incidents during volcanic eruptions?

In response to the incident, local authorities are enhancing early warning systems and improving community awareness and education about volcanic hazards. There are also stricter regulations being implemented for climbing during periods of increased volcanic activity. Moreover, authorities are working on better coordination and training for emergency response teams to handle similar situations more effectively in the future.
