    Proving the triple curl identity

I wonder if I'm allowed to switch the differential operators in the first term of the last line. And then, since the second term is a constant, maybe I can pull it out of the vector. Doing that, \begin{equation*} \begin{split} \nabla \times (\nabla \times \vec{A})& = \nabla \times...

    Proving the triple curl identity

Hmm.. I made a few typographical errors, but it seems my editing hasn't changed anything. Maybe it takes a while to update.

    Proving the triple curl identity

    Homework Statement Prove that \nabla \times (\nabla \times \vec{A}) = \nabla(\nabla \cdot \vec{A}) - (\nabla \cdot \nabla)\vec{A} using Einstein notation. Homework Equations \nabla \times (\nabla \times \vec{A}) = \nabla(\nabla \cdot \vec{A}) - (\nabla \cdot \nabla)\vec{A}...

    Schools Another gre/grad school question

Thanks for the reply, arunma. So I think what I will do is a compromise: take the last GRE (the one in December), cram right before it, and apply to some schools that haven't had deadlines yet. Then if I get accepted somewhere I want to go, I'll go there, and if not, then I'll take a year off...

    Schools Another gre/grad school question

Hey everybody, So I'm trying to decide when I should take my GRE Physics test, so I've got some questions. First of all, do most grad schools average your GRE Physics scores or pick the best one? If they do pick the best one, does it look bad if you've taken it twice, for example, and you...

What language should I learn for a mathematics degree?

What about Chinese? How advantageous would it be to learn that language given the fact that China's becoming more and more economically powerful? I'm not sure how much funding China allocates for the sciences, but it could at least help with employment after getting a degree. What do others think?

Is math research a waste of time?

Correct. Maybe I'm overthinking this a little too much. I should probably just be content that I am where I am. Thanks for the replies.

Is math research a waste of time?

Thanks for the reply. I've done the same reasoning, but in the back of my mind it seems like I should do something more physics related. What about getting a recommendation from a math professor rather than a physics professor? Any thoughts?

Is math research a waste of time?

Changed the title so it's not as misleading. Change didn't show up on main page, though.

Is math research a waste of time?

Is math research a waste of time for a physics major? Hey everybody, I will be starting my fourth and final year this Fall as an undergraduate with physics and math majors. Since in a couple of months I need to start my applications for physics grad school, I'm currently stressing out about...

How likely is it for one to get into a REU program?

I'm almost in the same boat, at least in terms of recommendations. One of them will be from my research adviser (been doing research for one semester). The other one is from my PDE math professor, who is probably the most able to judge my academic standing. Will it hurt me to get a...

Which Physics Fields Are Most Popular and Challenging Today?

According to some outside source that I read at some point (perhaps not credible, can't remember), most physicists classify themselves as Condensed Matter physicists. So this is a popular field, but one that has a lot of potential in terms of employment. There are lots of openings in industry if...

Schools Grad School & GPA: Advice for Undergrads

From what I've heard and read on various websites, even with a semi-low GPA you can still get into nice grad schools. Although GPA carries some weight, from what I understand, research experience holds a great amount of weight and nice recommendations can tip the balance. Basically, the school...

Need advice on whether solid state physics is something for me

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking of also doing a natural science minor (half biology classes, half chemistry classes) to hopefully help me down the road. It seems, however, easier to do a pure physics field in grad school rather than a hybrid of physics, biology, and chemistry. Also, I read...
