The level of maths in A-level physics is an absolute joke. How you can do 'advanced-level' physics without calculus is beyond me. Speaking from experience (I'll be starting my 3rd year of my physics degree at Warwick in a couple of weeks), the first year isn't particularly difficult maths wise...
Everyone knows that American sports are just glamourised imitations of european sports anyway! American football is just a girls' version of Rugby; baseball is just a strangely corrupted copy of cricket; and basketball is just...errr...erm...:tongue2: Only joking!
For the...
I think you're right, kidsmoker. The earlier editions seem to only mention Sears and Zemansky, and then Young and Freedman seem to get in on the act. The book's alright, but I tended only to use them for problems (quite a lot of the lecturers used the book to set problems from so it's worth it...
Haha - looks like we could form a Warwick Club here - I'm going to be in my 3rd year come September.
I'd agree with dx - there's not a massive jump in difficulty; they ease you in with physics you know and gradually add more maths. It might take a week or two to get used to lectures -...
As far as I know, none of Maxwell's equations say that. However, a complementary equation - the Lorentz force law - states what will happen to the wire. For reference, the Lorentz law is:
\vec{F} = q\left(\vec{E} + \vec{v}\times \vec{B} \right)
Now that's exactly what I do before I go on a 3 mile walk, eat 100g of beef...
Seriously, I'm sure you can argue for/against anything if you wanted to. Why does common sense seem to desert people whenever they talk about climate change?
Edit:
The Prius story reminds me of this...
Probably the best advice I can give you is to drop an email to the admission tutor/whoever's the most relevant person, and ask! You'll hopefully be able to get a feel for the place by talking to them, plus you'll find out what you want to know.
I don't know about American Scientist, but I've got a subscription to Physics World. It's aimed at anyone with an interest in science, and they have a "No equations" policy so it's very accessible. It is basically split into 3 sections: short recent news stories, longer articles and input from...
I think England share your frustrations. We invent all these wonderful sports - Football/Soccer, Cricket, Rugby, Golf - export them all over the empire, and everyone gets better than us! It's not fair! :tongue2:
Yeah, my bad. You normally see it bounce, but of course, you're right -...

Let me guess, Greece have given douze points to Cyprus? :bugeye:
Believe me, Evo, after watching eurovision you'll gladly watch American Idol for the rest of your life! It's that bad! It's not even a musical contest anymore, it's turned into a europe-wide "Lets hate...
Knocking three stumps out of the ground is certainly possible - I've seen it once or twice. But, a couple of times in 10 years of watching cricket means it's probably a rare event! I think Darren Gough managed it in a ODI - although I wouldn't quote me on that, it's a very fuzzy memory. What...
A lot of the early prog Genesis songs are mindblowingly awesome! I think Genesis suffer from the reputation Collins earned the band by moving to the pop rubbish they'll end up being remembered for. Anyway, a couple of my favourite Genesis songs...
Being in England, we don't get many earthquakes over here, but we had one a couple of months ago.

It was really surreal. I was listening to music at the time, and managed to convince myself it was my bopping my leg against the desk. Then...
