    Further to the above- Both of the asterix'd compounds are salts.. hint... Silver Nitrate is commonly used to extract halides. Potassium Sulfate is commonly used as a disintergrating agent. Good luck!

    I would use chomatography (including GC), mass-spec and IR-spec to determine probable compounds. If these are not available, looks like a fair bit of thinking will be needed ;)

    Rain contains other compunds, including (but not limited to) NOx's and CO2. Heavy water contains D instead of H... If by pure substance you mean H2O, then both can be impure dependant upon the amounts of D or Co2 etc in solution.

    Thank you :) I found this paper not long after posting this, and it is still one of the only papers I can find actually stating PAH solubility in a manner that is not a theoretical model! I much appreciate your assistance.

    A good First year Geology textbok should cover Igneous rock formations. Looking at radioactive decay of the mineral crystal lattice is more of an inorganic chemistry or physics problem, but here should be texts out there on the topic.
