Can Cars Cause Electrical Interference with Streetlights?

Well, the headlights were perfectly normal, I think, but that sounds like the answer. Duh! Although I don't see it happening now with our other cars, it could just be a different kind of headlight that doesn't trip the light sensor. I still think the electrical leakage idea is cooler, though. :)

    Why do transformers fail violently?

Well, I don't know that the transformers blew up; I just assumed that a loud bang meant that had happened. Apparently it could be this "tap fuse" you speak of that makes that noise. When the one on our street blew, I looked at the nearest transformer, the one I thought had blown, and nothing...

Can Cars Cause Electrical Interference with Streetlights?

This is going back a ways, but we used to have a car (I think it was the '89 Camry) that seemed to affect our streetlights. The lights often seemed to go on or wink out as we passed under them. Was this one of those you-wouldn't-see-it-if-you-weren't-there things, where it only seems to be...

    Why do transformers fail violently?

I've heard that lightning or extreme heat can make transformers blow. Well, I've had it happen near me twice recently, and neither time was due to lightning (AFAIK) or heat (it's winter). One time coincided with a car hitting a pole (actually, the supporting wires that are keeping it from...

Unlimited Energy From a Single Cable?

From a practical standpoint, I can see this being a logistical nightmare, and probably our money would be better spent on refining the use of solar and wind energy, etc. I was just wondering for the halibut if it would work.

Can a Magnet-Powered Wheel Generate Perpetual Energy?

Ahhh, I didn't realize that. Well, there you go. I knew there had to be a reason this wasn't "invented" yet. Thanks!

Unlimited Energy From a Single Cable?

This is crazy, but bear with me. Let's say the next mission to the Moon brings a cable. One that's still attached to Earth. They anchor it on the lunar surface. As the bodies move in relation to each other, the cable is tugged by the Moon's incredible mass through a station on Earth that uses...

Can a Magnet-Powered Wheel Generate Perpetual Energy?

I was thinking about perpetual motion and perpetual energy generation when I got to thinking about magnets. Now, for the record, I don't think this would really work, but I can't think of why not, so maybe you guys can educate me on this. Open the attached image to look at while you read...

I know there must be a reason this wouldn't work

    Gotcha. Thanks for your responses!

I know there must be a reason this wouldn't work

Granted, but the article I linked to said "squeezing" (a constant force) could generate electricity. I assumed that meant constant pressure on the molecular structure was generating energy somehow.

I know there must be a reason this wouldn't work

I was thinking about how gravity is used as an energy source, for instance, gravity pulling water over a wheely-thing produces hydroelectricity. I wondered if there was a way to perpetually use gravity as a continual source of energy without the normal catch -- water can only fall once before...

How can I fix the bugs in my Perl script using Text::ParseWords?

Domo arigato! By golly, why *don't* I just do that? :) I had thought about removing single-quotes and leading whitespaces from the text, but didn't know how. Plus I figured I just wasn't using the ParseWords functions properly. Regarding my typos, I notice at least one that seems to be a...

How can I fix the bugs in my Perl script using Text::ParseWords?

I hope a few of you are avid perl programmers. There seems to be a surprising paucity of decent perl-centric boards out there, so I thought I'd try this one since so many smart people come here :-) I myself am new to perl but have plenty of experience in C++/Objective-C and other languages...

    Debunking Possession: African Tribe's Experience

This is of course not something which has been or could be (if it exists) studied in a lab. But I'm interested in your thoughts, scientifically-oriented or not. By possession, of course, I mean the supposed invasion of a physical body by a spirit one. It's something rarely claimed to occur...

Are UFOs Mentioned in Ezekiel and Revelation?

Don't have time to read all those links, but the christiananswers.net link is extemely faithful to what little the Bible actually sys about angels. Most of the people hear and see about them is not Bible-based. As for the overall topic of this thread, as someone already said, the moving...
